UAE woos tourists with 5-year multi-entry visa

Sheikh Mohammed makes announcement.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday announced that tourist visas in the UAE will now be issued for five years.

"Today, we change the system of issuing tourist visas in the country, to make the duration of the tourist visa for five-years, multiple uses, for all nationalities," Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

"We received more than 21 million tourists annually, and we want to establish the UAE as an international tourist destination," he added.

The move comes in a bid to support the UAE's tourism economy, and affirm the country's position as a global tourist destination.

During the meeting, the cabinet reviewed last year's achievements and approved the new tourist visa. Sheikh Mohammed said the visa would be available to all nationalities.

Sheikh Mohammed said that the move aimed to establish the UAE as a "major global tourism destination" and was part of wider plans to prepare the country for the next 50 years of development. At present, he said the UAE welcomes about 21 million visitors each year.

"The year 2020 will be different because it is the year of preparation for the next 50, the year in which we design the future of the Emirates," he said on Twitter.

The move is expected to provide a boost to the tourism industry and make it easier for residents to bring relatives to the country for visits.
Four-day New Year 2020 break announced in UAQ

The federal government had announced a one-day holiday for private and public sector.

The Umm Al Quwain government on Sunday announced a two-day holiday for the New Year, as opposed to the one day holiday announced by the federal government earlier this year.

According to a circular issued by the UAQ government, January 1 and 2, 2020 will be holidays for the government sector, and combined with the weekend the emirate will enjoy a four-day break. Work will resume on January 5, 2020.

Earlier, it was announced that fireworks to ring in New Year 2020 at Dubai's Burj Khalifa will begin at 11.57pm, and should last for five minutes.

The RTA and Dubai Police also announced a detailed plan for the New Year celebrations in Downtown Dubai, including closure of the Burj Khalifa station for a few hours. Read the detailed report here: bit.ly/BurjKhalifa2020

Fireworks will also be held in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah. Among the special features of the NYE 2020 fireworks display in RAK are the use of pyro-drones, which will create a spectacular display - starting with the countdown to the New Year and going on to recreating the key monuments in the emirate through laser displays and pyrotechnics. The pyro-drones will also be used for a majestic grand finale that marks the bid for a Guinness World Record. Another novelty factor is the Japanese aerial shell fireworks display, which is being brought to the region for the very first time.
